Why I Always Buy Web-Shooter Capacity Before Range in Spider-Man 2 (and What SM1 Gets Wrong)

Listen, I get it. You see that shiny "Range" node in the Gadget menu, and your brain whispers, “Longer webs mean more awesome.” But after watching Peter and Miles faceplant into a swarm of Symbiotes on Ultimate difficulty with an empty magazine, I’m here to tell you: your Web-Shooter is a grumpy little gadget that needs more ammo, not a longer leash. Trust me on this one.

The 8-Shot Tragedy (and Why Capacity Wins)

Picture this: you start a Hunter fight with only 8 Web-Shooter shots. That’s it. Before your first wall throw even lands, the magazine is already gasping for air. No web-up pressure when Symbiotes swarm. No fast takedown setup. And your Surge management? A mess. I’ve been there — I’ve thrown a punch at a Hunter, only to realize my web-shooter was on a coffee break. So here’s my practical verdict, delivered with love: buy Capacity first. Range helps with positioning, sure, but it rarely saves a close-to-mid-range brawl.

In Spider-Man 2 (I’m looking at you, v1.004+), the first Capacity node takes you from 8 to 10 shots for 110 Tech Parts and 2 City Tokens. That’s two extra webs for crowd control — enough to chain a web-up, a wall throw, and a gadget follow-up without running dry mid-combo. Range, by contrast, costs 225 Tech Parts and 3 City Tokens, and most of your actual web-ups happen well inside normal combat distance. The real breakpoint is hitting 12 shots, not extending the travel distance of a shot you might not even need.

Node Effect Cost
Capacity 1 8 → 10 shots 110 Tech Parts, 2 City Tokens
Range Shots travel farther 225 Tech Parts, 3 City Tokens
Capacity 2 10 → 12 shots 425 Tech Parts, 5 City Tokens, 2 Rare Tech Parts
Potency Fewer shots needed to web-up 600 Tech Parts, 8 City Tokens, 2 Hero Tokens
Ultimate Sustained fire greatly raises fire rate 800 Tech Parts, 10 City Tokens, 3 Hero Tokens

Later on, once mobs survive long enough that a full 12-shot magazine still feels strained, prioritize Potency. Fewer shots per web-up means more targets controlled before a Hunter or Symbiote can reset the fight. The Ultimate node is a late-game payoff for sustained firing — buy it after your core crowd-control gadgets are actually working. And yes, Range can be a sensible bridge purchase if it’s required to reach the second Capacity node, but treat it as a comfort node, not a crowd-control win condition.

SM1 and Remastered: Forget Range, Embrace the Refill

Do not — I repeat, do not — import Spider-Man 2’s Range logic into Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) or Remastered. There is no Web-Shooter Range node in those games. Instead, the upgrade path alternates Capacity and +15% Refill Rate, ending at 12 total shots. Spend your escalating Crime Tokens deliberately, because the Capacity route also needs Backpack, Landmark, and Base Tokens. Here’s the SM1 tier list I wish I’d had on day one:

SM1 Tier Upgrade Cost
1 Capacity +2, total 8 1 Crime Token
2 Refill Rate +15% 1 Backpack, 2 Crime Tokens
3 Capacity +2, total 10 1 Landmark, 3 Crime Tokens
4 Refill Rate +15% 1 Research, 4 Crime Tokens
5 Capacity +2, total 12 1 Base, 5 Crime Tokens

During long Spectacular or Ultimate encounters, take both Refill Rate nodes when standard webbing and Impact Web have to carry the room. That +15% refill twice over is SM1’s momentum tool — it reduces the dead time between web-up attempts when gadget cooldowns are unavailable. And please, save Impact Web for a standard enemy who can be removed immediately, rather than spending it on a target already controlled by webbing. Your future self will thank you. 😅

Gadget Priority for Ultimate, Spectacular, and New Game+

For high-difficulty and New Game+ builds, I use this practical order: Web-Shooters first, Web Grabber in Spider-Man 2 (or Impact Web in SM1) second, then Upshot or Spider-Drone for crowd control. Buy Capacity before Range, then favor Potency or recharge-oriented upgrades when available. This order preserves Symbiote Surge or Mega Venom Blast for danger spikes instead of using them to repair a collapsed basic-web loop. Here’s a little combo I’ve grown fond of:

  • Start a Hunter pack by using Web Grabber to cluster multiple targets.

  • Trigger Upshot to remove immediate pressure.

  • Follow with repeated webbing while the group is contained.

A 10- or 12-shot magazine keeps that combo alive far more reliably than extra Range. If the arena has walls, web-up the nearest vulnerable enemy first for a wall throw rather than attempting long-range picks with Swing Steering 0 positioning. Your web-shooter is not a sniper rifle, okay? It’s a very enthusiastic sticker gun.

Crafting Routes, Token Farming, and the Smart Buy-In

Farm with a resource job in mind. Stop street crimes for Tech Parts. Clear Photo Ops and Marko’s Memories for City Tokens. Check Prowler Stashes for Rare Tech Parts before chasing that 425-Tech-Part Capacity node. Reserve Symbiote Nests, Hunter Bases, and Mysteriums for Hero Tokens, since Potency needs 2 and Ultimate needs 3. And if you’re deciding whether to buy now or wait, verify the title and edition through official sources first — then commit your tokens to Capacity and combat-control gadgets before Range. The web-shooter will thank you. The Symbiotes will not. But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

… Just don’t tell Range I said that. It’s still useful for, uh, scenic photos.

If you have yet to jump into Peter or Miles' adventures—or you're planning to pick up the PC port to experience these web-slinging mechanics with unlocked framerates—timing your purchase is just as crucial as managing your gadget charges. Keeping tabs on digital sales and key discounts ensures you don't overpay for the complete editions or extra DLC chapters.

To avoid paying full price across storefronts, platforms like LootBar and monitoring tools like the PriceRadar Marvel's Spider-Man tracker make it easy to spot current deals and secure your copy at a discount. That way, you can dive straight into Manhattan with extra cash to spare and start assembling your optimal gadget rotation from day one.

Before locking in your purchase, it’s always smart to double-check which bundle includes essential extra story chapters like The City That Never Sleeps. Visiting the Marvel's Spider-Man Official PlayStation Page gives you a full breakdown of edition perks and technical features, ensuring you grab the right edition or PlayStation wallet top-up on LootBar and dive straight into Manhattan fully equipped.
