Sauna sessions can be a relaxing way to unwind, warm up the body, and take a break from daily stress. However, staying in a sauna for too long can cause excessive sweating, dehydration, dizziness, and overheating. For most healthy adults, a typical sauna session lasts around 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the sauna temperature, personal tolerance, and previous experience.

People who are new to sauna use should start with shorter sessions of around 5 to 10 minutes. This gives the body time to become accustomed to the heat. If you feel comfortable, you can gradually increase the duration during future sessions. There is generally no benefit to forcing yourself to remain inside when the heat becomes uncomfortable how long in an infrared sauna.

Experienced sauna users may stay for approximately 15 to 20 minutes per session. Some people use multiple shorter rounds with a cooling and hydration break between them rather than completing one long session. Listening to your body is important because heat tolerance can vary significantly from one person to another.

Hydration is another important part of sauna use. Because sweating causes fluid loss, drinking water before and after a sauna session can help reduce the risk of dehydration. Avoid using the sauna when you are already dehydrated, and leave immediately if you experience dizziness, nausea, weakness, headache, confusion, or difficulty breathing.

The temperature also matters. A hotter sauna may require a shorter session, while a lower-temperature environment may be more comfortable for a longer period. The goal should be relaxation and comfort rather than trying to tolerate as much heat as possible.

Certain people should seek medical advice before using a sauna, particularly those with cardiovascular conditions, blood-pressure concerns, pregnancy, or other medical conditions that may be affected by heat exposure. Alcohol and sauna use should also be avoided because alcohol can increase dehydration and impair judgment.

Overall, around 10 to 20 minutes is a reasonable general range for many healthy adults, while beginners can start with 5 to 10 minutes. The safest approach is to stay hydrated, take cooling breaks, and leave the sauna whenever you begin to feel unwell.
