How to Choose the Right Fit for Skating Shoes
Here are some tips for choosing the right fit for your skating shoes.
1. The "Golden Rule" of Sizing: Snug is Safe
When you buy a standard walking sneaker, you usually want a bit of "wiggle room." But for skating shoes, that extra space is your enemy. If your foot moves even a few millimeters inside the shoe while you are flicking the board, your timing will be off, and the friction will tear your skin apart.
The Heel Lock Test
When you try on a pair of skating shoes, lace them up all the way. Walk around, but more importantly, try to mimic a "flick" motion. If your heel lifts off the footbed even slightly, the shoe is too big. You want your heel to feel "locked" into the back of the skating shoes. This stability is what prevents the dreaded "heel bruise" when you land a bit too heavy on your bolts.
2. Width Matters: Don’t Squash Your Toes
Skateboarders come in all shapes, and so do feet. Some brands of skating shoes are notoriously narrow, while others are built like tanks with a wide toe box.
If you have a wider foot, forcing yourself into a slim-profile vulc shoe will cause cramping and "hot spots" within twenty minutes of skating. On the flip side, if you have narrow feet and wear "chunky" 90s-style skating shoes, your foot will swim inside them, leading to a lack of board feel. When shopping for skating shoes online, always look for reviews that mention if the model "runs narrow" or "runs wide." Your pinky toe should touch the side of the shoe, but it shouldn't feel like it’s being crushed.
3. Understanding the Break-In Period
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is returning skating shoes because they feel a bit stiff out of the box. High-quality skating shoes are often made of heavy-duty suede or reinforced canvas designed to withstand sandpaper (grip tape).
● Vulcanized (Vulc) Shoes: These offer incredible board feel and break in almost instantly. If you like to "feel" every vibration of the pavement, these are your best bet.
